Those sounds of constant water seeping through the roof of the city of tears were constant, to the point Astraea had learned to completely ignore it. Dreary. That's what Byzel was. Many problems presented themselves such as rat infestations, cockroaches, and the overall weather feeling musty. Though, for one with a poor family, what other option was there? Days, months, years would go on with little changing in Astraea's life, the dreary life embedding into her more and more. At her school, a rumor started making its rounds. It was not about love, relationships, or anything like that for once. This rumor was about a treasure, one untouched by any adventurers, due to the catacombs brimming with monsters that would rip them to shreds. Though, a rumor is a rumor. The Catacombs, last she remembered, was just a failed experiment, or something of the like. But, as time went on, the rumor kept being spread around, and Astraea caught wind of a ballpark figure on how much gold there was inside of it. It was enough to get her out of Byzel and make a living for herself, or enough to never have to work a day in her life. "It's worth a peek." She'd say as she prepared a weekend for it, slipping a white lie to her parents as to her destination. She readied all the essentials. Two daggers, a burning salve, some medicinal items such as potions and a medical kit, water and lastly, a flashlight. The sewers smelled horrible, the rats' bodies floating atop the river, various other things in the water, it disgusted her. Every now and then, there'd be a loud clang, causing the young Astraea to freeze in place, waiting for any other sound. She told herself she would book it if she saw any monsters. She had no magical ability, even if she were to cast a spell, she couldn't muster anything more than a measly spark of a flame. The interlude in the sewers was filled with thoughts of "Is this worth it? Is there even a treasure?" But she had to shake her head, she had already gotten this far. Going back would be admitting defeat. After a day of traveling, she packed up her makeshift camp in the sewers and set off again on her descent. After a while, she had arrived. Arrived at the catacombs at long last. Grabes would line the way to a broken down church, an eerie green light emitting from within. Flashes of blue would spark inside the catacombs as well. In the next few seconds was where everything changed for Astraea. A blue beast was chucked outside of the building, skidding on the floor until it almost touched Astraea. Silver fur lined its back, which was now sparking to life as electricity surrounded the beast. It looked like a wyvern. One of the ones without wings. It lunged forward to the church, as a huge red-skinned humanoid crow broke through with its club. The wyvern yelled as it approached the crow, but the crow braced itself, grabbed the wyvern and flung it towards Astraea. She tried moving out of the way, but she wasn't quick enough. She, as well, got knocked back along with the wyvern. It promptly got back up, flaring its fur back to life. It roared this time and looked back towards Astraea. It readied itself, crouching closer to the floor and then blasted off at an unimaginable speed. It bit on the crow's arm, lightning beaming out of its mouth, causing the crow to shake in shock and fall to the floor. The wyvern then looked at Astraea approached. It motioned its head and opened its mouth as if to say "Go, run!" But she was in shock. Was this happening in front of her? She could hear this wyvern's words. The wyvern quickly turned around, sensing that the crow was getting back on its feet. It stayed in front of Astraea, as if to protect her. The crow launched its club at them, the wyvern reacting quickly by grabbing Astraea with its furry and flat tail and blitzed to the side, though the club managed to slam into its shoulder. The wyvern started limping and the crow started flying up slightly, and then zoomed to them. The wyvern reacted by launching itself forward to meet the crow in a battle of headbashes. The two beasts fell down to the floor. Astraea looked inside her backpack and ran towards the crow, jumping on top of it. She had her two daggers in one hand and the burning salve in the other. She broke the burning salve on the crow's neck and then repeatedly stabbed the crow's nape, cutting as she rose. The crow lay motionless. The wyvern got up and limped over to the church. Astraea followed. The wyvern laid down and puts its head towards Astraea."Put your hand on my head." The wyvern said. Astraea did. A series of circles surrounded them, lightning crackling. She felt...power. Like, a potential had now come into her body. "The pact is now done, Astraea Amicita." The wyvern closed its eyes. "How did you know my name?" Astraea asked, but the beast was already asleep. After that, she made herself a name as a thuergist and attended the Academy of Eos, later down the line becoming a master of theurgy for the academy. Through many trials in her time attending the academy, she had saved a countless amount of people who would have ended up dead due to them biting off more than they can chew from quests. She was also a tutor for theurgy, surprising many students at the adaptability and power of theurgy. |
