They have evolved from primates and through the establishment of civilization, magitech and societal structures, enabled by their unparalleled intelligence, they have managed to stand at the top of the food chain for countless millennia. Early human civilizations in Serra date back to long before the establishment of Eos and the Serran Empire, but evidence suggests that the modern human didn't originate on the Serran continent, but migrated from elsewhere and settled here several tens of thousands of years ago.[break][break]
Humans have natural magical potential, fostered and enhanced throughout the ages, to the point that humans are likely the most magically capable lifeform on the planet. While there are certainly other living beings that boast powerful uses of magic, there is no known species that is able to match the complexity and variety in which humans can use magic, despite the fact that there are many species that boast a near-human level of intelligence.

This results in an alteration of their genetic makeup, to the point where they can biologically no longer be considered a human, but merely something very closely related. These alterations usually result in a human developing traits otherwise associated with other creatures. Mutants may grow wings, fur, horns or a combination of multiple traits. Mutations can be extremely subtle, such as merely having developed incisors, or pointed ears that can hear better. Most commonly, these mutations cause humans to develop animalistic, beastly appearances. They may even take on traits of etherious creatures such as wyverns or serpents. While these mutations are generally unique, and no two mutants are completely similar, Mutant parents tend to pass on their additional genetic traits to their Mutant children, and there have even been recorded cases of early mutant civilizations that shared a series of common traits among them.[break][break]
Culturally speaking, Mutants are treated as Humans. However, that has not always been the case. There have been periods in humann history, especially during the early period of the Kingdom of Eos, where Mutants were not only heavily dscriminated against, but even politically persecuted. Before this period of Mutant discrimination, the percentage of Mutants in the Kingdom was around 10%. They were a common sight, and were treated much like they are today. But during the era of monarchial oppression the Mutant population was decimated, and many Mutants were driven out of the kingdom and during later periods, even imprisoned and mass-murdered. This period is considered one of Eos' darkest moments in history that was recitified by subsequent civil war.[break][break]
In modern times Mutants can live and love freely. This cultural and societal freedom has allowed the Mutant population in Eos to rise back to around 5%. Going by the flat value however, there have never been this many Mutants living and thriving in Eos as there are today. While there may be humans that still harbor negative feelings towards Mutants, any discrimination or racism towards them is not only forbidden by law, but also societally shunned. Mutants don't need to have any fear of being at a disadvantaged or disenfranchised in Eos, and Eos is in fact advertised as one of the best places for Mutants, or anyone to build a life for themselves.

They are humans that were created through a process known as "Aetherbirth", where a biological, non-ethereal organism is born by means of magic. Aetherbirth was a secret experiment created by the inventor known as Grenouille Ribaldo Lacrím, who attempted to create improve the human condition and induce the next step of human evolution. This experiment succeeded in creating a lifeform now known as "The Original Homunculus". An incomplete version of the Homunculi we know today. Its incomplete nature was in large due to lacking proper humanity despite possessing great power and control of magic. It ended up attacking the kingdom, and, although it was subdued by the city's forces, it led to the Council discovering Lacrím's experiments. [break][break]
Taking his work for themselves and refining and perfecting the process, the Council ended up forcing and supervising Lacrím to continue the creation of Homunculi. The intention of creating a serving class for the people of Eos. These Homunculi were intended to be similarly powerful, but dull and obedient. Lacrím did their bidding, but managed to perfect Aetherbirth, allowing the creation of thousands of Homunculi that possessed humanity and were identical to their creators. The creation of Homunculi continued for several decades and the population of Homunculi in Eos rose to about 0.3%.[break][break]
In the centuries to come, Homunculi, despite being fully-functional humans, were oppressed and effectively treated as slaves. They were seen as "lesser humans" due to their artificiality. They were branded and barely possessed any rights. It took years of tiny steps of progress for Homunculi to slowly but surely manage to carve out their place in Eos' society. Many civil rights movements, protests and confrontations later, Homunculi have managed to garner the same rights as humans in Eos. It was only 50 years ago that Eos has begun recognizing Homunculi as equal to humans. They are still discriminated against in many parts of life, but they have begun to be allowed to become politicians, scholars, teachers and doctors. And thanks to their long life, Eos has received a large influx of skilled workers into its ranks. The population of Homunculi is rising nowadays as they possess more rights than ever, and families have begun forming.
