"no," she assured. "it doesn't sound strange. not to me, at least."
brighid puzzled over his words and the woman he described. he sought out a creature whom was a combination of intelligent and genuine. it was at that moment she understood why he had a difficult time acquiring a woman - especially of the noble variant. females were inherently finicky and difficult to please creatures - and she supposed those whom he had propositioned were just that; finicky and hard to please.
"i think all you need is patience," she advised, offering him a smile. "it's good to know that you're still interested in acquiring a wife despite being rejected so many times."
she imagined the male as disappointed and forlorn at the moment of rejection. the mere thought of him having been turned away so many times pained her, a hint of a grimace causing the corners of her lips to pull downwards into a frown.
"but it's not impossible to find what you want," she declared. "all you need to do is remain motivated and hopeful for the future."
brighid polished off the remainder of her apple, taking big bites of the crunchy food before inevitably whittling it down to its core. it would be tossed into the nearest disposal bin, the draconian female's aim fairly impressive.
"you're the noble sort - and handsome as well," she said, taking care to sprinkle in a little praise to further bolster his confidence.
she glanced skywards and realize that the sun had begun to shift its position. they were well into the morning now, with an abundance of moving bodies filling the formerly empty streets.
'damn.'
"i'll need to take my leave soon," she murmured, visibly disappointed. "i've work."
brighid's gaze settled upon her bare feet for a moment before she raised it to meet his own.
"may i see you again, ferr?"
it was yet another question that was tentatively presented to the male, her expression partially guarded - as though she feared rejection.
"perhaps when you're free from your duties again and have some time for yourself?"

'me? fair?'
she blinked at him, visibly unconvinced by his compliment.
'he is being polite. but if he at least finds my appearance to be tolerable enough...'
"thank you."
she had only just polished off the remainder of her smelt when he had offered her an apple. brighid happily accepted the bright and round fruit, her pointed teeth soon digging into its crispy flesh. she chewed slowly and considered his words as she did so, mulling over a response.
"it's strange that you'd be rejected, ferr."
perhaps she was in luck then? it was expected that a girl of her age and standing would seek out someone with the intention of courting them. but brighid felt as though she'd play the part of the manipulator if she took advantage of ferr's inability to find a woman.
'mother would tell me otherwise.'
the young woman released a snort at the thought of that sharp-tongued female. after contemplating and weighing her options she continued to speak, forcing herself to bolster a relaxed air about her.
"i appreciate your honesty," she said, baring her teeth in a broad grin. "and your willingness to accept my company."
she hoped that she had charmed him somehow. or at least left enough of an impression to be imprinted within the confines of his memory.
"i hope you don't mind if i pry..."
brighid hesitated for a moment or two before tentatively presenting the man with a question.
"is there anything you're looking for in a woman?"
she took another quick bite of her apple and swallowed it down, the little female attempting to rid herself of the nerves that threatened to serve as her undoing.
"perhaps i can offer some form of advice if i'm aware of your 'type'?"
it was a tiny fib - a slight alteration of the truth - but one she hoped he'd fail to take any notice to.

her smile lessened until it disappeared completely, her good mood unintentionally trodden upon by the kindly fellow.
"ah - well..."
another smelt went down, its potent taste lingering upon her rough and pointed tongue.
"not one boy took an interest in me - not really. mother assumed it was because of my horrid manners and lack of etiquette but i'd say it was due to the teeth - the claws - the eyes."
she pouted, reminded of the years spent being relentlessly teased due to how her magic had decided to manifest.
'lizard is what they called me,' she thought, her features scrunching up into a grimace.
"i'm not exactly the fairest of ladies, ferr," she said. "not in the realm of public opinion, at least."
to most brighid was little more than a child who had the misfortune of inheriting her distinguished mother's most prominent features. but while her dam was comparatively more tall and fine-boned her genetics had rendered her short and round.
"but i've grown use to it - not being wanted, i mean," she assured. "my family keeps me on as their record keeper. i organize an archive that contains a wealth of information and in exchange i'm allowed to maintain my distance from court."
it was a decent life and one where she was oft left alone within the vast confines of house alder's library. brighid couldn't imagine herself doing much of anything else at her age; and while it was rather lonely she made do.
"and how about you, ferr? i've heard nothing of you having a wife nor keeping a mistress. are you distracted by work, perhaps?"
it'd be a simple thing for him to procure a wife - at least from her perspective. he was a handsome specimen and his position was prestigious in quality. yet he was entering his late twenties and still lacked a proper mate.

"the house of alder keeps me on as their record keeper."
the young woman's usual duties were oft described as monotonous and absurdly dull by her peers. but she derived an immense amount of enjoyment from organizing and involving herself in the process of restoring age old tomes. she spent most of her days reading or retrieving the requested precious tidbits of information contained within the vast confines of the archive.
"it's nothing fancy," she said, shrugging. "but i enjoy being around countless pieces of literature on a daily basis."
she supposed her love for books was fairly obvious - rhyme having come across the woman with her nose practically lodged into one.
"if you know how to read, write and count, i'm sure you can find a place in an office somewhere. business owners are always in need of people with skills considered basic."
they had reached the garden's entrance only a handful of minutes later, brighid deciding to offer friendly advice as they continued on their way.
"how long is this friend of yours allowing you to stay?" she asked. "until you get on your feet - i'm hoping. there is affordable housing someplace in particular sections of eos but i fear its quality is a tad lackluster."

his stride was a bit lengthy, but the young woman managed to maintain a position by his side by hurrying hers own steps along. very much thankful for the opportunity to accompany him - his easy acceptance of her request having bolstered her confidence - she'd happily press onward with the conversation at hand with a certain amount of gusto.
'don't muck this up,' she thought. 'don't - muck - this - up.'
her mother had made an attempt at teaching her how to properly address the men and ladies of the court. due to her being rather beastly, she was expected to make up for her unremarkable creatures by showcasing a charming personality.
'i'm going to muck this up.'
she had had little to no success properly roping in a potential suitor, which had caused mother to grow impatient with her after her so many failures.
'but i can make friends easily enough,' she thought. 'i have a better chance at that than anything else.'
"j-just for the day."
brighid had just barely caught the tail end of his question, the girl slightly flustered as she rushed to offer the soldier an adequate response.
"i've only just moved from my family's property," she said. "so i typically purchase my own meat and milk from the market every morning to last me for a day."
it explained why she had yet to even catch a glimpse of him until now. she was still very much new at perusing the bazaar on her own.
"i assume you've important duties to tend to after the early morning hours. it must be exciting that - the life of a soldier, i mean."
brighid doubted that she'd be able to manage such an occupation. she hadn't the foggiest idea of how to wield weaponry nor navigate a battle.
'i've read about it in books,' she thought. 'but that's it, really.'
"i doubt i'd be much use as one," she admitted. "i much rather read about the life than partake in it."
the scent of fish caused her to take pause, her nostrils flaring in reaction.
"oh! fish! a moment, ferr. i won't be long."
she hurried to purchase a handful of smelt, no less than five bundled in thin cloth upon purchase. instead of stowing them away she'd return to ferr's side and treat them as though they were a snack. brighid popped one into her mouth and swallowed with an appreciative hum, the slippery and wonderfully raw creature easily slipping down her gullet.
"i haven't had these in ages," she breathed. "they're perfectly perfect while fresh, you know?"

"ferr," she drawled, her head bobbing up and down in a nod. "ferr, then."
a surge of relief washed over her as she noted his amicable reaction - the soldier appearing to not have taken any offense to her foolish display nor her clumsy greeting.
'he seems the modest sort, actually.'
she'd expected him to be far more boisterous; arrogant, even. but the man carried himself in an unassuming way, his choice of words revealing to her this aspect of his personality. he was also undoubtedly polite, the offering of his hand and the lowering of his body greatly appreciated by his female counterpart.
"i am brighid," she said. "brighid stoneshire. i fear i've no grand title to go along with it."
the look upon her face reflected her pleasure at his willingness to partake in her company.
"and it's a relief to know that i'm not disturbing your usual morning routine."
his paw easily encompassed her own, the flesh of his palm unsurprisingly callous as it brushed against her own. it was as though he was specifically tailored for both field work and battle, his form heavy set and muscular. her gaze lingered upon the occasional scar that marred his flesh, the young woman intrigued by them.
'i'm tempted to ask. but that'd be rude, wouldn't it?'
"do you shop here as well, si - ferr," she amended, taking back her hand. "the shop owners must offer you goods at a reasonable price - far more reasonable than usual."
brighid wondered, at that moment, what he purchased to ensure he remained well-feed. she was certain that the council filled the pockets of their soldiers well enough; surely he'd have the funds needed to partake in the finest cuts of meat - the freshest bread made from golden wheat - and spices that were rarely gotten.
"may i join you on your walk for a while? i believe we're going the same way."

the man was larger than she had ever imagined him to be. this didn't detract from his appearance of course - no - instead it added onto his aesthetic in a positive way.
"i-i'm fine," she reassured, a tremble present within her voice. "i tripped over my own two feet - i apologize for that."
her wide-eyed gaze remained fixed upon him for a moment, the girl appearing particularly taken in by the length of his horns. they were prominent, slightly curved and made her own look rather pitiful in comparison.
'they're huge,' she marveled.
despite the obvious disparity in regards to their height, she didn't feel at all overwhelmed by his presence. instead, she delighted in the chance to encounter someone who was worthy of the title of captain; especially when they were a mutant.
"you're aesir," she said. "the knight captain of the ordan district."
a look of delight settled across her draconian features, her face flushed with excitement.
"i never met a captain before," she continued, her head bobbing up and down. "you're - "
her expression transitioned into one that betrayed her sudden sheepishness over her own behavior thus far. it was improper for a noble woman to behave in such a way - especially when they were addressing a man of power.
"i - well - "
she tittered softly, the female positively giddy by the reality of their meeting.
"sorry," she managed, stifling her chortles. "i must be acting terribly odd. it's just - it's an absolute honor to make your acquaintance, sir aesir."
brighid was half-tempted to offer her hand in greeting, but instead held them behind her back.
"i didn't expect to see you in a place like this one. hopefully nothing's amiss?"
she desperately hoped she wasn't inconveniencing the fellow by greeting him in such a way. and she feared that he'd view her as just that - an inconvenience.
'i doubt i'm leaving much of an impression either way,' she thought, despairingly.

it was sometime in the early morning when she arose to scour the markets. she had already procured the usual combination of recently butchered meat and freshly produced milk contained in glass that would fill her belly for the day. everything was wrapped in cloth once purchased and carefully stowed away within a small and expertly woven basket, its handle presently hanging from the crook of her arm as she maintained an unhurried pace whilst walking through the markets.
the young noble enjoyed shopping when everything had only just opened, the selection of goods offered shortly after sunrise undeniably superb in quality. additionally, the great bazaar was sparsely populated at this hour, the risk of brushing against another remarkably low.
'i wonder if i should try for salmon today,' she thought. 'i've already gotten a cut of beef but i'm craving fish at the moment.'
fish was something she rarely indulged in, the girl only ever bothering when she felt an overwhelming desire for it. the tiny bones that were lodged inside were an inconvenience, but the soft flesh that surrounded it was positively delectable.
'and bread - i've not had bread in a while.'
her gaze slid from a display that consisted of colorful fruits to that of a passing figure - something about their hulking size and coloring having caused the young woman to almost immediately fixate upon them.
'they look... familiar,' she thought, her eyes rounding. 'very familiar.'
brighid sucked in a little breath, her form growing rigid for a moment as she felt a surge of excitement smother her good sense.
"it's - !"
before he had the chance to disappear from vice, she'd rush after him and raised her voice in an attempt at acquiring his attention.
"e-excuse me! excuse me! my lord? a moment - please!"
she very nearly stumbled over herself then, only just catching herself before she toppled over.

brighid appears pleased enough by his answer, firm in the belief that he would come to enjoy staying within eos's borders once properly settled.
"when i was a child i got myself lost a dozen times over," she admitted. "it happens."
her shallow grin broadened out as he politely inquired about her living situation.
"i live in the rosa district, actually," she chimed.
the mutant appeared more at ease as she continued to chat with the fellow, the formerly rigid line of her form growing increasingly lax.
"i've a small apartment of my own there. expensive - i'll admit - but it's very lovely and quiet."
the girl began to unhurriedly lead him to the garden's primary exit. her fine cloak billowed around her as she walked alongside rhyme, and a brief glance downward would reveal that the girl lacked any amount of footwear.
"have you had any luck with finding work? there's always someone hiring in eos. though quality jobs require some proof of education."

"rhyme," she parroted.
an interesting name - but strangely fitting.
'so he is new, then?'
she hadn't encountered many individuals whom had originated from outside of eos's borders. brighid was left feeling curious again, her gaze sweeping over his lean form with a rare show of open interest as she further assessed his clothing and posture.
'he's dressed decently enough,' she thought. 'so i'll just assume his friend belongs to a district of moderate wealth.'
brighid clicked her tongue, her eyes falling shut for a moment as she mulls over the information that she had been given thus far.
"yes - i think i remember where that is," she said. "let's just hope i don't lead you astray."
a short paused ensued, the girl appearing to consider something for only a handful of seconds before addressing the white-haired fellow again.
"i am brighid," she introduced, dipping her head politely. "it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, rhyme."
she offered up a tentative grin.
"i hope you intend to stay in the city for a good while if not permanently. it's... beautiful, isn't it?"
'a bit crowded,' she admitted, inwardly. 'but still very nice. i can't imagine living anywhere else.'

'that was vague.'
brighid blinked owlishly up at the stranger, noting the sharp contours of his facial features as well as his straight white mane. nothing about him was even the least bit familiar - which wasn't at all surprising to the young woman.
"are you new to eos?"
initially, she had little desire to start up a conversation with the fellow; but her own curiosity inevitably won out as she presented him with the inquiry. there was something about the man that screamed 'fresh-faced' and 'new'.
"you're a bit far off from where you need to be," she explained, patient. "i guess you just took a wrong turn somewhere."
the girl reluctantly tucked away the well-aged journal she had in her possession and double checked to make sure the latches were secured.
"i - um - i'll help you get to where you need to go. it'll be quicker that way. i think the crossroads is what you're looking for."
brighid made her way to her feet with a quiet grunt, running a hand over her auburn cloak to rid it of bits of grass.
"do you remember what your friend's house looks like at all? it'll help me figure out where it is."

she had noticed his presence and acknowledged it with a glance, remaining hopeful that he'd keep mostly to himself and maintain distance while wandering this section of garden.
'no such luck,' she thought.
he'd approach her, appearing entirely uncertain as he did so.
'is he lost? please don't let him be lost.'
brighid supposed that the gardens were rather large in scale. those whom were unfamiliar with the area could be easily turned around if they weren't careful. his words only confirmed that - yes - he hadn't the foggiest idea of where to go.
"oh. um. i..."
her voice trembled as she spoke, the girl half-tempted to pull up her cowl and conceal her face from view. instead, she closed her book and pulled it almost protectively to her chest as she addressed the white-haired stranger.
"i can help, i suppose," she said, averting her gaze. "a-are you looking for something?"

during the small hours of the morning a place such as this could be appropriately described as barren. there was little to no foot traffic and a natural silence held domain over the garden. brighid only ever bothered visiting when it was in such a state, the girl not particularly fond of areas that were even sparsely populated.
'i can read in peace.'
she pulled down the hood of her fine cloak, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she felt the sun's light shine down upon her. brighid experienced the usual surge of energy from the contact, her body having grown warm.
"the flowers are beginning to blossom," she murmured, her voice soft. "they're lovely."
brighid delighted in her immediate surroundings, the girl's strange gaze sliding across the span of the gardens that were within sight. she'd relax as she realized that she was well and truly lone, her grip tightening upon the strap of her satchel as she neared a cherry blossom tree. the girl settled comfortably at its base, her rear cushioned by the soft and slightly untrimmed grass as she reached into her bag.
she'd pull free a single book, its cover worn and its pages brown. it once belonged to an alderwood noble that had passed some centuries ago, his entries offering her insight of an era that had come and gone. the ink was a bit faint but still very much legible as the woman poured over it.
