The two ran past busy streets, avoiding people where they could. From what the reports had said, the drake had flown southwest of the Academy – Emmara, although unused to the bustle of city life, knew the telltale signs of a wyvern passing when she saw one.

There was only one place the drake could’ve gone, assuming no confounding factors.

“From the testimonies given to us, this monster sounds like a drake,” Emmara said, as she ran with Atlas. “Assuming that this drake wasn’t controlled, it’s probably underground – in the sewers. Once it burrows underground, it can go anywhere. Luckily for us, I know how to track it, even in dimly-lit environments.”

When she saw a manhole, Emmara stopped. “I hope your clothes aren’t too expensive,” she said, flipping the manhole open with her bare hands easily and jumping down.

“Very well,” Emmara said, making sure to smile. That was what people did when they were pleased with how others acted, right? Unfortunately, her smile came out as…somewhat awkward, and was quickly replaced by her usual flat affect.

Without wasting any time, Emmara pushed herself off the wall, turned around perfectly, and started leading the way for her newcomer friend. It didn’t even occur to her to ask her companion’s name; why would it? They were workmates, nothing more, and giving out names would be inefficient.

Once the two had gotten out of the corner, Emmara cleared her throat. “Try to keep up,” she said without turning away, before breaking into a sprint towards the monster’s purported location.

Emmara frowned. She didn’t like this.[break][break]
A wyvern had broken into the Academy of Eos, injuring a student and damaging research material people had worked hard to make. The student was recovering well – Emmara had briefly visited her to ensure that – but the damage was still done. While odd jobs like these were the only work Emmara’d gotten recently, they were just as important as big contracts.[break][break]
She leaned against the wall, waiting for her fellow hunter. There wasn’t much time – the wyvern couldn’t have gone far, given how recent they’d received this request, but time was too precious a resource to waste. Wyverns could cover a surprising amount of space in a short period of time, after all.
