Surely, there was a metaphor for life lost somewhere within the Ruins of Berkel. The rotting echoes of a past existence, frozen and choked beneath the dust. Historians might weep for the tragedy that was this abandoned city. Leviathan was not such a person. Not even a crocodile tear would be shed on her part for the culture that had been lost here. After all, what was lost could be found again, and returned to glory if passed into the right hands.
All of that would come at a price, of course.
Even the Academy of Eos would not find itself excused from this caveat despite the treasure hunter’s former employment with them. Few would remember her, for she had stood out only by her appearance. Charity was not the mutant’s forte, but everyone would get something they wanted by the time this job was over. As Leviathan pondered the thought she slowly twirled a bright red feather between two fingertips. She couldn’t decide if it was appropriate or overkill for an Academy Master to be taking on this job personally. Whether it was to retaliate for the slight against the Academy or for some private cause she couldn’t tell just yet.
It would be something fun to chew on during their interactions, though. Soon enough she would get to meet this Kasiani Atlas. She waited for the woman next to an old, dried up fountain. The stone structure and courtyard was overtaken by time. Cracks were commonplace on the once ornate carvings lining the fountain’s circular wall. Even the weeds had given up trying to claim the area, and had long since yellowed and died. Standing with her back to the setting sun Leviathan studied the phoenix feather again with a thoughtful look.
It was not by chance that the Academy had been given a letter with another such feather wrapped within it. Nor had it been a fluke that Leviathan’s name had been mentioned as a potential ally in this endeavor. She had been the one to hand over the letter, and offer her assistance as well pending a negotiable compensation. Maybe... A Master had been sent to keep an eye on her to ensure she’d keep her word? The thought drew a smirking grin across her lips revealing her pointed teeth in the dying light.
Long legs began a smooth and slow walk around the fountain’s edge as the treasure hunter kept an eye out for Kasiani. She kept the phoenix feather visible in one hand at her side just in case the Master of Arcanism wasn’t familiar with the mutant’s appearance.

It had been seven years since his migration to Eos, and only now was he ready to take his first steps into the Academy he was sent to attend. Being born and raised within the isolation of his tribe in the Waas forest, acclimation into the modern world took time. Going from the vast open forests ruled by ancient vegetations and archaic beasts of the ethernano, to the labyrinth mazes between tightly packed spires and buildings in Eos was an adjustment akin to a well deserved culture shock. Despite the abrupt change in his environment the young Trague adapted much sooner than his average tribesman, where most took over a decade to download and process the culture and manufacturing of magic within Eos. Still, despite his accelerated assimilation, beginning at the Academy would be like a blank slate all over again. Like learning a new system within a system.
However, the day before Elwar could make the traditional trek through the scholar station to attend his first day at the Academy, he had received an official institution dossier that instructed him to report to a one, ‘ Kasiani Atlas’, the current and presiding Master of Arcanism, for his orientation proceedings. The thought of meeting one of the great masters of the Academy from the start sent chills through his body. Initially, he believed his surname may have been recognized from the various bestiary’s his great grand parents wrote and published for the Academy back in the X440’s. Although the catch at the footer of the dossier painted more of an unconventional call to action perhaps in an effort to disperse the foot traffic of new students at the start of the new semester.
“The Ruins of Berkel..?” Was all he remembered thinking to himself as the back of the dossier forecasted details to meet with Kasiani in the Southern Plains to the southeast on the outskirts of the ruined and deserted Serran kingdom. His visual confirmation being to find a woman in possession of a phoenix feather to know he had successfully found his way. The adventurousness in him chomped at the opportunity to officially travel and explore the parts of Serra he had never seen. Having started his journey on foot the night before, Elwar had finally arrived in Berkel with papyrus papers strewn about between the bindings of his notebook. His interest in documenting his own bestiary could not help but stoke the fires of his curiosity along the way, taking notes upon many of the creatures observed along his trek.
Elwars long jet black hair was held up and tied by a white hachimaki as his familiar Xala, a small brown coated kit fox, traversed his shoulder blades with a spoiled bravado of nonchalance. His grey kimono proving tattered from the trailblazing of his journey while his black scholar satchel bulged awkwardly having been stuffed to the brim with scrolls and a mess of other unkept supplies. His basket woven sandals would rake across the stone roads of the abandoned city before another being came into view near an old fountain as he proceeded into the opening of what appeared to be a wildly overgrown courtyard. The person before him was definitely a female, although much taller and broader than himself. There was a sort of reptilian air about the woman, perhaps a mutant of some sort replete with webbed appendages and a large tail. More importantly, within her possession, was the phoenix feather as described in his Academy dossier.
“I do apologize if I kept you waiting Ms. Atlas, I am here to meet you for the orientation!” Elwar exclaimed as he closed the distance with a light jog, waving his indescript Academy dossier as if its small print would somehow be legible to anyone in the immediate distance.

Kasiani never really saw herself as someone who would be sent on a little scavenger mission. Because this particular mission involved retrieving a group of artifacts, one of them, that that possess an immortal species, it was expected that someone with experience should be in charge. Thus, leading Kasiani to be one that has experience to be tagged in the mission. However, she thought that someone like her wouldn't do something like this. As a matter of fact, anyone capable of doing this mission asides from just a master in general could do this mission. On the contrary, Kasiani's unlimited devotion and loyalty to the academy has told her otherwise. [break][break] While she had no problem doing this by herself, she was accompanied by two other people. The first one was said to be a treasure hunter, Leviathan; a very suitable and convenient role to have on board since Kasiani wasn't one to scavenge often. The second person was a student from the academy, Elwar Trague; he was a student whose grandparents have heavily contributed to the arts of theugry in the academy and a student she invited to do this mission with. To her, It was an efficient way to help prepare him for missions like this given from the academy and a way to welcome him into the academy. [break][break] A hand ran through some locks of her hair and gave a flick to move her hair from the front and to the back. Elegant steps were taking within the abandoned kingdom, her green eyes scanning the area to search for the company tagging along in her endeavors of retrieving these artifacts. She did pity the ruins of what could have been a successful, or at the very least decent, kingdom. Although it was a rival, it didn't stop Kasiani from wondering how far such a kingdom would've gone hadn't it been abandoned. [break][break] Finally, she spotted two people by an old fountain. What immediately grabbed her attention was a phoenix feather held by a large woman who's appearance interestingly takes on a reptilian image. By her was a young man with a fox idled on his shoulder. If her senses served her well, the young man was Elwar Trague and the large woman was Leviathan. She found the two people she needed to complete this mission. [break][break] "Well, it's nice to know we're all on time and ready to act as quickly as we can." Kasiani greeted while approaching the pair, forcing a warm smile and crossed both arms over her chest. Even small talk wasn't her best strength. She gave herself a distance from the two but not to the point where she'd be considered far with a strict nod given. Personal space was always a priority at all costs for her. [break][break] "Now, as we all know there were several artifacts stolen from the academy years ago and we're here to collect them back. However, it's clear that our priority lies on the most important one: the phoenix egg. There are even rumors that such an item is being sold and must retrieve it as soon as possible." [break][break] Kasiani paused to take a quick glance at the other two before continuing. "I suggest we jump straight into business. The last thing we want is a powerful creature sold to the wrong hands and unleash any possible terror."

The first person to arrive was a black haired youth. Leviathan ceased her slow pacing to meet his gaze as the distance closed. So, the Academy had sent someone to accompany their Master of Arcanism after all. If she had understood things during the initial briefing it would be someone new to the Academy. Elwar Trague. Only his surname meant anything to her, but there would be time to investigate that later. The boy’s experience or lack thereof was made apparent with his greeting, but Leviathan replied in good humor, pouncing on the opportunity for amusement.
“I am not your precious Master,” she answered slyly, taking several slow and long strides towards Elwar as she flashed her serrated teeth with a grin, “..but, there are secrets that I could teach you. I might have to kill you after, though.” A wink was added onto the last line, and she'd let the young student interpret things for himself.
Unfortunately whatever response Elwar would give would be the end of her fun as the true Master of Arcanism made her appearance shortly after. The brunette had an aura of rigid professionalism getting into things without so much as an introduction. There was a smile on Kasiani’s face, but something about it and her abrupt demeanor prompted Leviathan to not return the friendly gesture. The mutant simply listened and observed the other woman as she spoke, moving only to pocket the phoenix feather she had been holding. Once Kasiani had stopped talking Leviathan stepped into the discussion.
“Sorry, but pardon a quick point of deliberation for each of you then since time is of the essence,” she said cheerfully while holding up both of her index fingers at shoulder height. One finger then pointed towards Elwar before she glanced to him and continued with a playful smile.
“Orientations first so there’s no further confusion. That woman is your Master of Arcanism, Kasiani Atlas. I am Leviathan, your guide through Berkel. If you have any questions during this field trip direct them to her. Speaking of which…”
Leviathan pointed her other finger towards Kasiani as her own gaze followed as well. Her smile widened back into a grin as she spoke casually once more.
“Hit the ground running, huh Boss? I’m game for that. First thing’s first, though; how do you want any threats handled? Your job, your rules.” The mutant arched her brows at the question, curious to hear what Kasiani had in mind.
