It builds the educational foundation of Eos and is responsible for the widespread use of magic in Eos. In simple terms, "the academy" is a conglomerate of various schools, universities and faculties all united under one banner. The university of Eos being the largest of the bunch, the academy functions as the purveyor of knowledge and study, as well as a place of expression and creativity. It is responsible for the public schooling and education of Eos' citizens. [break][break] Children until the age of 15 are required to visit the public school system. Then they are free to enter the employment sphere or take up higher education and visit the University of Eos, the institution of higher learning and practice of magic. Those that graduate from the university tend to have every opportunity layed out for them, as skilled mages are in high demand in every facet of business and industry in Eos. Any sympathizers of Grimm's ideas were politically persecuted, he was branded a traitor and terrorist, and his reputation was destroyed. Grimm was turned into one of Eos' most infamous villains in the city's history. However, it was this martyrdom that caused his followers to continue to organize in secret. In the years to come they created a heavily de-centralized group of mages rallied around Jeremiah Grimm's personality and his ideas.[break][break] The followers of this cult-like community strongly believe in all of Jeremiah Grimm's ideology that he wrote down in a manifesto that his followers call the "White Scripture". He, and by extent his followers strongly believe that civilization and order is a detriment to the use of magic, and that study and research yields nothing if it can't be put into practice. That the limits of human power can't be broken as long as order and civilization exist. As such, Grimm Troupe strongly opposes any form of authority and restrictions on placed on the use of magic in the name of freedom. In recent years with dissatisfaction amongst the people rising, recruitment to the Grimm Troupe has become more and more effective, and the council has become privy to its continued existence. Although the public is not aware, investigations have begun.[break][break] The Troupe partakes in various acts of terrorism, usually thought to be the work of lone wolves that act alone, rather than on the order of an organization. Bombings, murders, kidnappings of council officials are all on the list of actions the Troupe undertakes. In that vein, House Alder is as much a criminal instituation as it is a noble family, and is not above extortion, blackmail, sabotage and in some instances even murder. Arcanism is defined as the process of studying and excercising methods through which Aether can be manipulated. Arcanism is the most commonly used form of magic among the people of Eos. While it requires study and discipline to become a proper Arcanist, Arcanism comes in varying degrees of complexity. There are many simple spells and abilities that are easy to learn. These usually have little effect, such as lighting a candle, or making something float, or improving one's sight in the dark, but are nonetheless applications of Magic that must be thoroughly understood before they can be properly used. This is the general rule with Arcanism. Even a highly attuned person might fail to light a single candle because they lack the proper understanding behind the process of manipulating fire in such a way that it would perfectly light a wick. In contrast to this, there is a vast library of incredibly powerful Spells at every Arcanist's disposal. Even someone with very little attunement could be an incredibly powerful Arcanist because they have studied the inner workings of Aether to the extent that they can understand and practice Spells with ease.[break][break][break]
Invocation
Invocation is defined as the process of calling upon the unique Imprint Aether can leave behind in a living creature. Invocation is a fairly common form of Magic, as becoming an Invoker and developing an Imprint can be a natural process within some people. To become an Invoker, Aether must create an Imprint within one's body. This is usually done by meditating on the presence and flow of Aether, but can happen to some people by simple chance. There are people that receive an Imprint at birth. The more attuned someone is, the more likely they are to develop an Imprint. These Imprints are linear abilities that have no specific structure and are different to every Invoker. Through Imprints, Invokers can cast magic without the use of Spells. Invocations follow as the process of drawing out the latent abilities of an Invoker's Imprint to great effect. Ultimately, Invocation, although taking practice and excercise to master, requires no actual study or knowledge of Aether like Arcanism does. But on the contrary, it requires a mage to be highly attuned and in touch with themselves and the Aether within them. [break][break][break]
Artifice
Artifice is defined as the process of creating and using an object that can withstand the force of great quantities of Aether flowing through it. This happens through two main methods. Forging and Enchanting. In the forging process, an object is constantly imbued with Aether until its completion. This creates a so-called Vessel. A vessel is an object that is highly resistant to Aether. Then an Enchantment is placed upon a Vessel. To create an Enchantment a mage creates a Runic pattern, which expresses an ability, that is then placed upon the Vessel causing the ability to be imbued within the Vessel, turning it into an Artifact. An Enchantment can then be used by simply letting Aether flow through the Artifact. Artificers often choose weapons to Enchant, and more often than not also study the use of these weapons extensively. To some people, Artifice is considered a brutish practice as it was initially conceptualized for combat, but any Artificer would agree that it takes years of practice and study to craft a masterful Artifact.[break][break][break]
Theurgy
Theurgy is defined as the study and binding of attuned creatures. The abundance of magical entities in Serra has founded its own school of magic that allows Mages to use tame magical creatures to use for personal benefit. Theurgy uses a process called "Binding" to fully subdue an attuned creature and turn it into a Familiar. Common candidates for Familiars include elementals, specters, wyverns and serpents. After encountering a creature, one must Bind it to one's will by mentally subduing it by way of Enchantments. This can be done by force, which usually leads to a battle of the mind, and sometimes even the body, or can be done with the creature's consent. Some Familiars even seek out their owners. Ultimately the creature submits their to the user's will and becomes bound to a Theurgist's orders and wishes. Once this is done, a Theurgist can forcibly command a Familiar, even against their will. Theurgy has evolved to the point where Theurgists can even transmute a Familiar's abilities onto their own body. The more a Theurgist understands their Familiar's ability, the easier it will be for them to utilize them to their fullest.[break][break][break]

The more physically able and intelligent a creature is, the more difficult it is for a Theurgist to bind a creature. Some Familiars may be bound to a user by choice. As most aether-attune creatures display a near-human level of intelligence it is not uncommon for a Theurgist and their Familiar to develop relationships. A Familiar usually can't disobey their Theurgist's will, but still retains self-awareness. A Familiar can exhibit a range of abilities depending on their species. A Theurgist is not limited to binding one Familiar. Usually Familiars remain in the vicinity of their Theurgists to call upon them immediately.[break][break] Familiars - A Familiar is a typically aether-attune creature that displays one or several magical powers that are bound to a Theurgist's will, who can use their Familiar's abilities as they please. Familiar's can vary greatly in size, physical strength, endurance and traits. They are usually kept close by a Theurgist to fight alongside or for them. A Theurgist and their Familiar have a mental link for purposes of communication that is established during the process of binding.[break] Traits - Traits are the natural abilities Familiars possess that are always at a Theurgist's disposal. They can be plentiful and easily rival the abilities of even gifted mages, depending on the Familiar. [break] Transmutation - The act of transcribing the physical traits and powers of a Familiar onto the user to give to temporarily allow the user to wield a Familiar's powers. This can be done remotely without impeding on a Familiar's abilities for the Theurgist to be able to fight alongside their Familiar, or even alone. Artifacts are always created from scratch. Due to the forging process, Artifacts become incredibly tough objects. The more skilled an Invoker, the easier of a time they will have channeling and using their ability, and the less stamina it will take.[break][break] Imprint - Imprints are the unique signatures that develop within an Invoker's body, similar to an Enchantment. These linear abilities may interact in various ways with the environment, but will generally not change and can't be modified once manifested. Arcanists solely cast magic in the form of spells that usually require some kind of medium to take effect, whether that be speech, hand signs or other forms of seals or sigils. Arcanists can learn spells from any type of magic without being restricted. However, this type of magic requires extensive study, research and practice to perfect. Arcanist characters need to have studied magic sometime in the past. Even a simple spell such as throwing a lightning bolt can take weeks of practice and memorization to be properly cast.[break][break] Hexes - The first type of spells available to Arcanists are called Hexes. They require very little invocation to perform. A wave of the hand or a single spoken word may be enough. However, their effects are congruent with their ease of use. They are simple applications of magic that require barely any concentration to cast and can typically be slung around in rapid succession.[break] Sorceries - The second type of spells available to Arcanists are called Sorceries. Sorceries are the more powerful versions of Hexes, while still remaining relatively simplistic. These typically need several words, large motions of the hands, or extensive signs or sigils to be performed. They require some amount of concentration and usually can't be rapidly cast, but tend to still be fast acting.[break] Incantations - The last type of spells available to Arcanists are called Incantations.
